D.C. Everest Senior High School Staff Update

Weekly Happenings
Happy Homecoming!

I have to share. At our first home football game two weeks ago I looked in the stands following the game and saw about 5 students going row by row and cleaning the bleachers.  After this Friday's game I saw more than 20 students.  I asked one of the leaders if they were asked to do it and if not why were they doing it.  Her response - "It was dirty."

We talk about culture - defined as behavior - One student, saw the bleachers dirty after the first game. We now have more than 20 cleaning the bleachers.  This student exemplifies "leading from where you are." We all have influence over others - We are all leaders.  I've been thinking over the impact that student has had by one small act - #EverestPride

Thank you - all advisors and your student representatives for a great Sophomore Club/Activity Presentation last Tuesday. It was mentioned that groups had a lot of students sign up.

Great work Joe Finnegan and anyone who donated to help provide funding for band students next Summer to travel abroad!  https://www.waow.com/news/top-stories/donated-shoe-fundraiser-covers-cost-of-student-trip/article_6dd80780-3559-11ed-ae09-9b3947f223dc.html

Announcements/Week Ahead

Club/Activity Meeting Calendar - It was suggested to put together a calendar showing when meetings were taken place and where.  If you are an advisor, please put your meetings on this calendar through May if known.  Pay special attention to how many other groups are listed and pick a day that is least signed up for.  Here is the link:  Club/Activity Meeting Calendar 2022-23

The JH is beyond excited to re-engage in Adventure Day this year knowing it provides many of their students with opportunities they wouldn’t experience otherwise. The dates are October 19 and April 26. Knowing that transportation is a challenge due to a driver shortage, please avoid field trips for those days as much as possible.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) - A reminder that temporary extension for Federal PSLF forms are due by 10/31/22. Staff requesting employment verification for PSLF can send forms to Riana Mefferd at rmefferd@dce.k12.wi.us.

Funeral Leave Codes in Skyward - Soon to be new in Skyward- in the unfortunate event that you need to request funeral leave, you will be prompted to select the appropriate code based on your relationship to the deceased and add a detailed description in the box. This will hopefully minimize your supervisor needing to contact you regarding details while you are on leave. A reminder that our employee handbook lists the exact number of days allotted per relationship.

Preferred Subs - Please make sure you enter your preferred subs into Frontline.

PD Opportunity-QPR (Question,Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Training - In recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, DCE will be offering QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training to anyone who is interested in becoming a QPR-trained Gatekeeper. What does this mean? From this training you will be able to: recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope, know how to get help and save a life. This is a two hour training (one evening) that will be offered the following days/times at:
  • October 6th from 4:30 - 6:30 (Junior High IMC)
  • October 20th from 5:30 - 7:30 (Junior High IMC)

September 12 - 16

D.C. Everest Senior High School Staff Update

Weekly Happenings
It was a great start to the school year last week! So much excitement and engagement in classrooms throughout.  One new student to our district told me last week that he really likes the new school and specifically mentioned he felt his teachers were super nice.  He stated that was not his experience in other places.

A number of other students as part of a classroom activity shared that the biggest positive in their school experience was that the building was full of teachers who truly care!

Amazing words this week from our students!  Great start - let's keep going!

One congratulations this week to Sara Mlodik who broke the course record at the SPASH invite and the school record in the 5K, running a 18:10. The previous record was set by Stefanie Zeihen in the 90's at 18:31.

Announcements/Week Ahead

Safety Drill - On Wednesday during Advisory we will begin with a table top safety drill.  We will come over the PA and ask all teachers to discuss what we would do in the event of a lockdown announcement.  You will receive your safety booklet on Monday.  Please review your protocols ahead of time so you feel comfortable describing our responses.

Club/Activity Presentations:  A reminder that the sophomore & new student Club/Activity Fair/Presentation is on Tuesday, September 13th, during ELT in the field house.  Sophomore ELT teachers are asked to bring your students down and help supervise.  Cards will be put into mailboxes prior to event. Please hand out to all of your ELT sophomores before coming down.  Have the students write their name on the card and bring along with a pen/pencil.  The students need to talk to 3 groups (group member needs to initial the card by their club name) and return to their ELT teacher or Dawn Seehafer who will be in the field house.

Club/Activity Group Advisors - Please make sure your group reps have their own signup sheets and pens/pencils.  They are asked to initial/sign over the Club/Activity name on the cards sophomores will have in hand.

Board Policy Sign Off - There are a few that have not signed off on reviewing the annual board policies.  Please complete and sign off on the sheet in Dawn's office by the end of this week.  Thank you.

Emergency Contact Information Questionnaire - If you haven't completed this and are still willing to in case of an emergency, please do so asap.  Thanks  Emergency Contact Information Questionnaire

3rd Friday Count Sept. 16th  - We will be doing 3rd Friday Count during 2nd period on Friday, Sept. 16th.  Rosters will be put in teacher's mailboxes the day before.  Please take attendance at the beginning of the hour and have a student walk it down to Attendance and slide it under the window immediately after taking attendance. Make sure you sign the roster which verifies the accuracy of student enrollment. Emails will be sent out with further instructions as we near 3rd Friday count.

Homecoming Assembly Altered Schedule - On Friday, September 23, there will be an altered time schedule to accommodate for the homecoming assembly.  Please see this link:  Homecoming Assembly 9/23/22 Altered Schedule

Welcome Back from the Mental Health and Wellness Team! We are excited for a positive and resilient focused school year! If the summer was your time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate yourself then we are excited you are back with a full bucket! And if summer was a time of business, stress, or challenges, we are glad you are back to a routine and schedule! We recognize that returning to school is both positive and challenging and our team is here to help and support ! We look forward to bringing you ongoing knowledge and information this school year following our Trauma Informed and Resilient Schools training and notifying you of our current mental health and wellness trends. If you have questions or information to share throughout the year please reach out to Erin Jacobson; DCE Mental Health Navigator/ School Social Worker; or a member of your schools student services team!

September is focused on Relationship Skills! The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult. Kids learn and grow when meaningful connections are made with adults. Serve and Return bids for connections with your students!

Fire Department Inspection Tip of the Month - One of our most common citations from the Fire Department is items hanging from the ceiling in a classroom. Please make sure you do not hang anything from your classroom ceiling. We want to keep you, students and our first responders safe when in our buildings.

New Teacher Institute for Mentors/Mentees - We were asked to share this updated flier for the school year New Teacher Institute.  Calendar invites to mentors/mentees will be sent shortly.
