January 30 - February 3

D.C. Everest Senior High School Staff Update

Weekly Happenings

This was an amazing experience for our DCE SRH String students! Rock Infused Orchestra-Wausau edition was a smashing success! (And that didn’t involve any instrument smashing!)

The Winter Sports Tournament season got underway this past weekend! Congratulations to our Dance team who finished 5th in Kick and 1st in Pom making it to the State Competition in Lacrosse next weekend in both routines!

DCE Lit Magazine recognized - Congratulations to Matt Cepress and all who teach students how to engage in authentic and meaningful writing!  From the National Council of Teachers of English - "It is my pleasure to inform you that your school’s literary magazine, Point of Convergence has been selected to receive the rank of Excellent in the 2022 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program. From all of us at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), congratulations to you and your students on this exceptional publication. We commend you for inspiring a love of writing that your students will remember for the rest of their lives."

Announcements/Week Ahead

Safety Drill Table Top Exercise - Tuesday during announcements we will conduct a tabletop safety drill. As we did in the Fall an announcement will discuss safety procedures for Security Watch, Soft Lockdown, and Hard Lockdown. Teachers will be asked to follow up the announcement with discussion of what a hard lockdown would look like in their classrooms.  The drill should take around 5 minutes.

Professional Development Day - Our next professional development opportunity will be on February 17th. Dr. Lindell sent out information on the day last week. You should have completed registration for your 3 sectionals last week using Frontline. Please ensure that is completed.

Group photos for clubs and organizations - Here is the tentative schedule for group photos on Wednesday, February 1st: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AAFd2cMw8RfUqADnrfbZO2V-CHiHqJn5rbJpWz5tX8Y/edit?usp=sharing. I think I have included all groups from my original list unless I heard from you about not being photographed. If you have any other groups to add or drop, or notice any conflicts/issues with this schedule, please let Sarah Aleckson know as soon as possible. Additionally, if you still need to send in a roster please do so. You can also let students know when groups will be photographed (there will be announcements as well).  Thanks again for your help as I figure all of this out!

REMINDER: Autism Training - Don’t forget that Lisa Ladson will be in the district to provide PD. All of her PD opportunities are on Frontline for staff to sign-up - associates may get paid for this training.
February 2 and 3:  Understanding, Supporting and Teaching Executive Functioning Skills for your Students - The purpose of this training is to help participants identify specific areas of executive functioning deficits in their students and develop the ability to effectively support and teach students who struggle with executive functioning skills. This includes identifying students who struggle with organization, planning, initiation, staying on task, impulse control, emotional regulation and adaptability and resiliency. The educational impact of each of these areas will be explored and discussed. Participants will learn strategies and supports that can be used to address executive functioning challenges as it relates to classroom participation and performance

The 23-24 Course Registration process begins on Friday Feb. 10th during ELT, in the auditorium. 10th and 11th grade ELT's have been assigned a date to attend the 23-24 course registration presentation in the auditorium. Please check the date your ELT is assigned on the document below and communicate this to your ELT in advance. The assigned date for your ELT is mandatory. Please inform students they should report directly to the auditorium, bring a charged iPad, and sit in their designated areas (signs will posted). We ask that attendance is taken once students are seated and to help pass out the course registration materials in the auditorium. If a student is absent on their assigned date, instruct them to attend one of the other presentation dates.

All staff will receive a hard copy of the updated 23-24 Course and Career Handbook and extra copies of the handouts for students. We will need to enlist the help of ELT teachers a few other times during the scheduling process. Stay tuned for more directions.

Announcements/Week Ahead

REMINDER: Autism Training - Don’t forget that Lisa Ladson will be in the district to provide PD. All of her PD opportunities are on Frontline for staff to sign-up - associates may get paid for this training. A reminder of her first session:
  • February 2 and 3
    • Understanding, Supporting and Teaching Executive Functioning Skills for your Students - The purpose of this training is to help participants identify specific areas of executive functioning deficits in their students and develop the ability to effectively support and teach students who struggle with executive functioning skills. This includes identifying students who struggle with organization, planning, initiation, staying on task, impulse control, emotional regulation and adaptability and resiliency. The educational impact of each of these areas will be explored and discussed. Participants will learn strategies and supports that can be used to address executive functioning challenges as it relates to classroom participation and performance.
ACCESS Testing UPDATE- Due to the virtual day on January 19, testing will be on January 24, 25 and 26.  There will be 52 EL students taking the mandatory ACCESS language exam including 4 tests: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.  Testing will begin after the period 3 start bell rings in rooms 331, 216, and the auditorium.  Bells will be turned off from 9:15-2pm on Tuesday/Thursday and 9:15-2:40pm on Wednesday.

Health Room Updates/Reminders
  • If a student is leaving the classroom to go to the health office, please make sure the student has a pass. There are extra passes in the staff lounge if you need any.
  • Each teacher should have a stock of band-aids. Please check to make sure you have some in your classroom. Contact Jacki G if you need more. Emily is also hanging a band-aid box outside of the health office door for students to grab so they do not need to go into the health office for minor cuts.
  • If you are making a 9999 call please indicate if the emergency is behavioral, medical, or both. This helps Jacki and Emily know if they need to respond with the admin team. You will also need to identify the student of concern with a medical call so Jacki and Emily bring any medication that may be necessary for that particular student.
  • When planning for field trips please be cognizant of the 2-week advanced window. Not only do Jacki and Emily need to identify health needs, they also need to put together medical bags and train staff on rescue medications prior to the field trip. Also, double check to make sure that all students' legal names (ones listed in Infinite Campus) are listed on the student field trip list.

Field Trips - Are you taking students on a field trip?  If so, you must go through your course list and ensure that each student you plan to take has field trip permission.  You can do this by looking up each kid in IC.  At the top of their summary page is an icon that reads *no field trips if they do not have permission. That student is not allowed to go unless we get permission from their parent.

Reminder to staff that after hour events need to be put in Book king. Book king is for reserving areas in the school, making custodial aware of people entering the building, adjustments for cleaning, and now snow/ice maintenance.

Access Testing this week - ACCESS testing for EL students will take place this week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Bells will be off from 3rd hour until then end of 10th hour. EL Students will be excused from their classes to take this mandatory test.
